Answer: When there is not another entire (i.e. unsprayed or uncastrated) cat of the opposite sex available, male cats and female cats that are on heat may mount a number of the same sex and show the typical mating behavior, including neck grasping and pelvic thrusting. However, this is not true homosexuality since the activity is soon abandoned when an entire member of the opposite sex is present; in the case of tom cats this means a female on heat.
This sort of behavior is also seen between kittens of the same sex before puberty, occasionally as early as four months’ old and sometimes between males when one wishes to show his dominance, such as his ‘ownership’ of territory.
